How to Build a Sales Funnel That Actually Converts

By Zach Schleien

Most sales funnels are over-engineered and under-performing. Here's the simple framework that drives real revenue.

Most sales funnels are built by marketers who've never sold anything. They're full of email sequences, tripwires, downsells, and abandoned cart flows - and they convert at 0.5%.

Here's the sales funnel I use. It has three steps. It converts at a rate that actually matters.

The Three-Step Funnel

Step 1: Attract (Content → Website)

Create content that addresses your ideal client's biggest problem. Not content about your product - content about their pain.

For me, that's articles like why long landing pages work and how to get press without an agency. These attract founders who are struggling with growth - my exact target client.

Every piece of content has one job: drive the reader to my website.

Step 2: Convert (Website → Call)

Your website has one job: get qualified prospects to book a call.

This means:

  • Clear headline: What you do and for whom (outcome-focused, not feature-focused)
  • Social proof: Immediately visible. Logos, numbers, testimonials.
  • Long-form page: For high-ticket offers, more information converts better
  • Qualification form: Filter out bad fits before the call
  • One CTA: Book a call. Not "learn more." Not "download our guide." Book a call.

Step 3: Close (Call → Client)

The sales call is where revenue happens. Structure it:

First 5 minutes: Build rapport. Ask about their business. Minutes 5-25: Diagnose their situation. Ask about current revenue, biggest challenges, what they've tried, their goals. Listen 80% of the time. Minutes 25-35: Present your solution. Frame it as the bridge between where they are and where they want to be. Minutes 35-40: Present pricing in the context of ROI. Handle objections. Final 5 minutes: Clear next steps. Either a yes, a no, or a specific follow-up date.

Why Simple Beats Complex

Complex funnels have more failure points. Every additional step loses people:

  • A 7-email nurture sequence? 50% drop off after email 2.
  • A free webinar before the call? You attract freebie-seekers, not buyers.
  • A tripwire offer? You anchor them to a low price, making the high-ticket sale harder.

My funnel has three steps. Content → Website → Call. The fewer steps, the fewer drop-offs, the more revenue.

The Numbers

Here's what my funnel looks like in practice:

  • Content reach: ~10,000 views/week across LinkedIn and blog
  • Website visitors: ~500/week
  • Calls booked: ~15/week
  • Close rate: ~40%
  • Average deal size: $8-12K

That's 6 new clients per week from a three-step funnel. No email sequences. No webinars. No tripwires.

Common Funnel Mistakes

1. Too many options. If your website has 3 CTAs, the prospect chooses none. One CTA. One action. One path.

2. No qualification. Every unqualified call costs you an hour. Ask qualifying questions before the call happens.

3. Skipping the content step. Cold traffic to a sales page converts terribly. Content warms the audience before they ever hit your website.

4. Over-automating. Automation is great for follow-up. It's terrible for building trust. At the high-ticket level, human connection closes deals.
