Why Every Creator Needs an Email List, Even With 100K Followers

By Zach Schleien

Social media followers are rented. Your email list is owned. Here's why every creator and founder should prioritize email over everything else.

You have 100K followers on Instagram. Congratulations. You own exactly zero of them.

Instagram changes the algorithm? Your reach drops 80%. Your account gets suspended? Your audience disappears overnight. The platform shuts down? Everything you built is gone.

Your email list is the only audience you actually own.

The Math That Should Scare You

Average organic reach on Instagram: 5-10% of followers. Average email open rate: 20-30%.

If you have 100K Instagram followers, maybe 5,000-10,000 see your post. If you have 10,000 email subscribers, 2,000-3,000 open your email.

In other words: a 10K email list can outperform a 100K social following in terms of actual eyeballs on your message.

And email subscribers are higher-intent. They gave you their email address. They actively chose to hear from you. That's a fundamentally different relationship than a casual follow.

Why Founders Especially Need Email

For founders selling high-ticket services or products, email is the conversion channel. Here's why:

1. You control the timing. Social media shows your content when the algorithm decides. Email arrives when you send it.

2. You control the format. No character limits. No competing content. No algorithmic penalties for links. You get the full canvas.

3. You can segment. Not every subscriber needs the same message. Segment by interest, engagement level, or buyer stage and send targeted content.

4. It compounds. Every new subscriber makes your list more valuable. Unlike social media, where a follower from 3 years ago might never see your content again, an email subscriber remains reachable indefinitely.

How to Start

You don't need a massive audience to start building your list. Here's the minimum viable email strategy:

1. Choose a platform

Use a platform that lets you own the list and control deliverability. Full ownership matters more than any specific tool.

2. Create a lead magnet

Give people a reason to subscribe. This could be:

  • A checklist (e.g., "The 10-Point Landing Page Audit")
  • A template (e.g., "My Exact Cold Email Template for Journalists")
  • A case study (e.g., "How I Went From $0 to $50K/Month")

3. Add a signup form everywhere

Your website, your social bios, your email signature, your podcast description. Every touchpoint should mention your list.

4. Send consistently

Weekly is ideal. Monthly at minimum. The moment you stop sending, your list goes cold. Consistency beats frequency.

The Compound Effect

I've seen founders with 5K email subscribers generate more revenue than influencers with 500K followers. Why? Because the email subscriber relationship is deeper, more direct, and more actionable.

Every email you send is a chance to:

  • Share valuable content that builds trust
  • Promote your offer to a warm audience
  • Drive traffic to your landing page or blog
  • Get direct replies that turn into sales conversations

Start Today

If you take one action from this post, let it be this: set up an email list and add a signup form to your website. Even if you only get 10 subscribers this month, that's 10 people who actively want to hear from you.

In a year, those 10 become 100. Then 1,000. Then 10,000. And unlike your social following, nobody can take them away.
