How I Would Grow a Barbershop From Zero to Fully Booked

By Zach Schleien

Most barbershops rely on walk-ins and word of mouth. Here's the exact growth playbook I'd use to fill every chair, every day.

I'm not a barber. But I've spent 15 years building growth systems for businesses of all sizes. And when I look at most barbershops, I see the same problem: great service, terrible marketing.

Here's exactly how I'd grow a barbershop from zero to fully booked.

Step 1: Own Your Google Presence

Before anything else, your Google Business Profile needs to be perfect.

  • Professional photos of the shop, the barbers, and finished cuts
  • Accurate hours, address, and phone number
  • At least 50 reviews (I'll explain how below)
  • Posts every week showing recent cuts

Most barbershops set up their Google listing and forget about it. The ones that win treat it like a social media channel.

Step 2: Build a Review Machine

Here's the system:

  1. After every cut, hand the client your phone with Google Reviews already open
  2. Say: "If you liked the cut, would you mind leaving a quick review? It really helps."
  3. For clients who leave reviews, offer $5 off their next cut

Within 3 months, you'll have 100+ reviews. That alone will put you ahead of 90% of barbershops in your area.

Step 3: Instagram as a Portfolio

Every barber should be posting their best cuts on Instagram. Not for vanity - for proof. When someone searches "best barber near me" and finds your Google listing, the next thing they'll do is check your Instagram.

Post daily. Show before-and-afters. Tag clients (with permission). Use local hashtags.

Step 4: Referral Program

Word of mouth is already your best channel. Systematize it:

  • "Refer a friend, you both get $10 off"
  • Print referral cards with a unique code
  • Track which clients bring the most referrals and reward them

Step 5: Local Partnerships

Partner with nearby businesses:

  • Gyms: "Show your gym membership, get 10% off"
  • Real estate agents: "Welcome to the neighborhood" packages
  • Men's clothing stores: Cross-promotion

Step 6: Recurring Revenue

Sell a monthly membership: "$60/month for unlimited cuts." This creates predictable revenue, increases visit frequency, and builds loyalty.

Why This Works

This playbook works because it follows the same principles I use with high-ticket consulting clients:

  1. Own your presence where people are already looking
  2. Build trust through social proof
  3. Systematize referrals instead of hoping for them
  4. Create recurring revenue for predictability

The tools are different, but the growth framework is identical. Whether you're a barbershop or a SaaS company, the fundamentals don't change.
